Earthquakes CBSE Notes Class 8 Physics

Disaster: A disaster is a sudden event that causes a lot of damage and harm to people, property, and the environment.

Natural Disasters: Natural disasters are events caused by nature, like earthquakes, floods, or storms, that cause harm and destruction.

Geosphere: The geosphere is the solid part of the Earth, including the rocks, soil, and the layers inside the Earth.

Earthquake

➥ Sudden shaking or trembling of earth is called Earthquake.
➥ It lasts for a very short time.
➥ It is caused by deep disturbance within the earth's crust.

Occurrence of the Earthquake

➥Earthquakes occur when stress builds up in the Earth's crust, leading to a sudden release of energy, which results in the ground shaking.

  1. Earthquakes often occur at tectonic plate boundaries, where the plates meet.
  2. They can happen anywhere but are most frequent around the Pacific Ocean's "Ring of Fire."

Causes of the Earthquake

➥Earthquakes are primarily caused by the following factors:

Volcanic Eruption

➱ Earthquakes can occur due to volcanic eruptions. When magma rises to the surface during an eruption, it can cause the surrounding rocks to crack and shift, resulting in an earthquake.

Folding

➱Folding happens when the Earth's crust is compressed by tectonic forces, causing the rock layers to bend. This bending can lead to the formation of mountains and may cause earthquakes as the stress is released.

Faulting

➱ Faulting occurs when there is a crack or fracture in the Earth’s crust, and the rocks on either side of the crack move. This movement can release energy, causing an earthquake. Faults are typically found at plate boundaries.

Plate Tectonics

➱ Plate tectonics refer to the movement of the Earth's large plates (tectonic plates) on the surface. Earthquakes are commonly caused by the interactions at plate boundaries, where plates either collide, move apart, or slide past each other, generating seismic activity.

Anthropogenic Factors (Human Activities)

➱ Human activities, like mining, reservoir-induced seismicity (due to large dams), and deep underground drilling (for oil or gas), can also cause earthquakes. These human-induced earthquakes are typically small but can still cause significant damage.

Magnitude of the Earthquake

➥ The magnitude of an earthquake is measured on the Richter scale. This scale helps determine the size of the earthquake based on the amplitude of seismic waves.

  1. Richter Scale: Measures the energy released at the source of the earthquake.
  2. Moment Magnitude Scale: More accurate for larger earthquakes, as it measures the fault's size and the amount of displacement.

Seismograph

➥ A seismograph is an instrument used to detect and record the vibrations caused by earthquakes. It measures the intensity and duration of seismic waves.

Effects of the Earthquake

➥ Earthquakes have several destructive effects on the environment and human life:

  1. Effect on buildings: Earthquakes can damage or collapse buildings.
  2. Landslides: Shaking can cause landslides in hilly areas.
  3. Flash floods: Earthquakes may break dams, leading to flash floods.
  4. Loss of life: Many people can lose their lives due to building collapses or landslides.
  5. Loss of human property: Homes, businesses, and infrastructure can be destroyed.

Tsunamis

➥ A tsunami is a series of waves caused by the displacement of water, often due to an undersea earthquake.

  1. Cause: Earthquakes beneath the ocean floor can displace a large amount of water, creating waves that travel at high speeds.
  2. Impact: Tsunamis can cause widespread flooding, destruction of coastal areas, and loss of life.

Protection Measures

➥ To reduce the impact of earthquakes, several protection measures can be taken:

  1. Building Design: Construct buildings that can withstand earthquakes (e.g., reinforced concrete and steel structures).
  2. Early Warning Systems: Install seismic monitoring systems to predict and warn people about earthquakes.
  3. Disaster Preparedness: Educate people on earthquake safety, such as "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" during tremors.
  4. Emergency Kits: Keep emergency supplies like food, water, and medical kits readily available.
